Dog Days of Summer

It’s early August and finally we have summer. Had a cold wet spring and July was not the best, but summer is here now and we’re enjoying the warm dry weather.

Oh boy there's water down there.

Not far from where we are camped is a great off leash area with streams and ponds where we can take Boscoe for a run or a swim. He has a grand time fishing and hunting in the bushes surrounding the water.

Now that's really talented. She didn't eat the pizza and allowed her trainer to take it from her. Not in one piece though.

We took Boscoe to Dog Days in the Summer event at a local park. Visited all the booths, got lots of treats (Boscoe that is), watched a doggie talent show and costume contest. But the best event was an agility course where for the cost of $8 your pet could chase a plastic bag tied to a string over ramps, through tunnels, over hurdles and along the straight away.

Over a ramp. See the string?

Boscoe is a hunter at heart, he’s death on squirrels, chipmunks and bunnies and he’s done an admirable job keeping the Canada Geese away from our campsite.  We thought he’d be good at this so we paid the fee and let him have a try. Wellll!  He looked at that bag and then at us as if to ask “You want me to chase that?” . Then he meandered around the course sort of chasing the lure just to humor us.

Boscoe jumps through the hoops.

The second time around he ran down the straight run at the beginning of the course and when he was supposed to turn the corner he went over the fence and kept going, barking gleefully as he ran around from booth to booth begging for treats and doing all his tricks for an appreciative audience. That’s the terrier in him; maybe if a toy rabbit or squirrel were tied to the string he might have gone after it; but a plastic bag? That’s no fun. He’d rather meet and greet at a social event. He’s not stupid ya know.

Some greyhound owners entered their dogs and you’d think they could do this standing on their heads but every one of them was so disinterested you could almost hear them saying “I’m retired and you can’t make me do this”.

This guy was so eager to chase the bag his owner could barely hold him.

Border collies and labs would have done it all day if you let them. They were chasing fools.

Now this is his idea of fun.
