Mustang Island State park is home to many shore birds, gulls, terns, herons and egrets. But brown pelicans are our favorite.

What a strange and ungainly bird. They soar effortlessly over the dunes in formation catching the updrafts in their open wings.

I have to admit I didn’t take these pictures. I could never find the birds in my view finder before they had soared away. Mike is far more patient while framing a shot. Still he got a lot of empty sky along with the good shots. Thank heaven for digital cameras.


Next stop Brazos Bend State park, another beautiful park, offering very different scenery.
