Beep Beep. It’s a Road Runner

This is Ezekial, the road runner, at least that’s what the park residents have named him and I assume it’s a him. He lives and hunts in our area of the park and comes to our feeders two or three times a day. Not for the seeds we put out, but for the sparrows that flock for free food.

He stands absolutely still, waiting for an unsuspecting bird to land nearby.

Road runners are fast on the ground but weak fliers, they have no problem catching small birds, swallowing them whole in two or three gulps. They will also eat rodents, lizards and a rattle snake is easy prey for these birds.
My what a big beak you have.

Contrary to all the cartoons we watched as kids they don’t “beep beep”. They make a soft cooing noise and sometimes a rattle.

From the cuckoo family they thrive in the harsh landscapes of the south western deserts and can definitely outrun Wile E Coyote of cartoon fame. Here is a trip down memory lane.
