The Moon Flowers Have to Go

Last year there grew in our yard some beautiful flowers. The large white blooms opened in late afternoon and withered in the heat of the day. We called them moon flowers.

They were small bushy plants when we left, quite pretty. Texas ended its years long drought and those plants grew and grew and grew until they took over our whole yard. Winter came to Texas and these huge plants died back to leave a jungle of dried weeds. Very unsightly. They had to go.

Not only were they big but they had thick woody stems which made them difficult to pull out. They needed to be dug up. A major job.

That’s done but these plants reseed themselves from seed pods that burst open and scatter thousands of tiny seeds everywhere. After all the rain we’ve had
I’m noticing small seedlings popping up all over our rock yard. The only way to get rid of them is to pull them (we don’t do poison).

Maybe I’ll leave one or two plants, just for the season.
