Goose Island State Park

No horses on Mustang Island and  no geese on Goose Island either. Saw lots of  other birds though.

Just an hour and a half drive and a 5 minute ferry ride from Mustang Island, Goose Island is a world away in what it offers the vacationer. Located on Aransas Bay near the town of Rockport, Texas, you can camp in the woods or right on the bay side. We chose the bay campsites, they were bigger and the mosquitoes dared not brave the windy conditions of the open campsites. Again, the wind blew so hard it was not comfortable sitting outside.

There is no swimming area but this is a birders paradise and a fisherman’s mecca. You can surf  fish off shore, fish from the pier that stretches out into the bay or go out into deep water on the bay by air boat.

Lots of walking trails wind through the woods and guided birding tours and nature walks are scheduled, although there were none while we were there.

The big attraction is the 1,000 year old Live Oak tree. Hard to imagine it was there before any European set foot on North American shores.

Of course, we found just the kind of restaurant we like. Not too fancy with lots of “character” and great food. Translation, a dive called The Boiling Pot, a Cajun Style seafood restaurant. They covered the table with big sheets of brown paper, then dumped our  food directly on the paper (no cutlery just a mallet to crack open the crab)  and we left all the debris right there on the paper. It made for an easy clean up, just roll up the paper and the table is clean. We had crab, crawfish, shrimp, potatoes and corn on the cob all boiled together with Cajun spice. Truly a memorable dinner.

Stayed at Goose Island 3 days before heading to Louisiana and New Orleans, The Big Easy.
