At the mall

Jan. 23 is the start of the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac so in anticipation of this event we went to the Chinese mall in Mississauga (just west of Toronto). Mississauga has a large and vibrant Chinese community with lots of shops that sell Chinese products, the best being the mall, where there is a large grocery store, some restaurants, a food court and  gift shops.

When we are on the road we really miss good authentic Chinese food, mostly what you find are buffets with everything on steam tables that has sat around for who knows how long and it’s probably loaded with MSG.  Alright in a pinch when you need a Chinese fix but just barely adequate. The criteria for a good Chinese restaurant is if your the only white faces in the place, if the menu is in Chinese with a few English selections, a line of people waiting to be seated is always a good sign and definitely no table cloths.

I think Mike was Chinese in his last life, he loves all things Chinese so much, his idea of going out for dinner is always Chinese and as long as I don’t have to cook I don’t care where we go. We ate in the food court at the mall, we had vegetarian fried rice and deep fried tofu with garlic. It was so fresh and hot, really tasty. We are eating vegan right now, but that’s another blog.

In the food court

Only Chinese grocery stores smell like Chinese grocery stores, fishy, spicy and earthy,  not the nicest. I wish I could send you the smells along with the pictures. Did some shopping, have to watch Mike, though, he wants to buy all sorts of strange and unidentified things that I have no idea how to prepare.
